The premalignant, common and sun-induced lesions that are said to keep on increasing with the age of an individual are known as Actinic Keratosis. Individuals who are light-complected are more vulnerable to develop Actinic Keratosis in comparison to individuals with dark complexions. The lesions are basically caused due to years of exposure to the sun and therefore it is considered that spontaneous remissions can be observed in Actinic Keratosis if the exposure to the sunlight is reduced to a considerable extent.

But the lesions can appear again on the skin and therefore it is very important for people to have a very clear idea regarding the Actinic Keratosis causes and prevention.

Actinic Keratosis

What are causes of Actinic Keratosis?

Chronic exposure to sun

Actinic keratosis is caused to a large extent due to chronic exposure to the sun. Sun can damage the skin completely and it is found that even ten minutes of sun exposure in many countries can lead to rashes and burns. Use sunscreen regularly as it reduces the chances of developing acitinic keratosis to a large extent.

Cloudy days are dangerous too

Cloudy days should not be considered safe because the rays of the sun can penetrate through the clouds and can bounce off snow, sand and other surfaces giving people extra exposure. If you are using a high SPF cream on a sunny day, use the one with low SPF even on cloudy days. SPF more than 30 during summers and less than 20-25 during cloudy days will be good to use.

Tanning lamps

The tanning lamps can also serve as the major cause of Actinic Keratosis because they give out more ultraviolet radiation when compared to outside heat and sun exposure. Bronzing lotions or tanning lotions make the light from from indoor tanning penetrate into your skin more deeply thus causing many skin disorders including actininc keratosis and skin cancer.

X-ray exposure

X-ray exposure also serves as a cause of Actinic Keratosis occasionally. The main reason behind this is the fact that X-rays release a lot of heat and have harmful sources. Avoid extensive exposure to X-rays to protect your skin and other harmful side effects.

Immunosuppressant drugs

Immunosuppressant drugs can also cause Actinic Keratosis and this is found generally in people who go through organ and albinos transplantations.

What are the methods for preventing Actinic Keratosis?

Limiting sun exposure

People should try avoiding the sun as much as possible so that the skin does not get tanned and burnt. Skin damage leads to Actinic Keratosis and the skin is mainly damaged by the sun.

Use of sunscreen

A sunscreen lotion should be used on a regular basis so that the skin can be guarded from the direct rays of the sun. The sunscreen should have an SPF of 30 or above to help in protecting the skin from sun damage.

Avoid tanning agents and beds

The use of tanning agents and beds should be avoided because these agents and beds emit ultraviolet rays that are considered to be very dangerous if they penetrate deep into the skin. Bronzing lotions and tanning lotions that are sunless should be used as a very safe choice.

Go through a skin check-up

Skin check-up should be done on a regular basis so that any changes in the growth of the skin and the existing moles, birthmarks, freckles and bumps can be reported to the doctor. These are some of the most common Actinic Keratosis causes and prevention that people should have an idea about.
